Elmer Day Celebrations at Swindon College
Ahead of a national day of celebration to honour one of the most popular children’s literary characters this Saturday (28th May), Swindon College’s Learning Resource Centre (LRC) hosted their very own ‘Elmer Day’ celebrations – with Early Years students reading to children from the college’s on-site nursery ‘Little Stars’ .
Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, created by British author David McKee is famous for a multi-coloured body and a cheerful personality, which has been delighting young readers for decades.
"We felt it was important to be a part of the national Elmer celebrations to encourage young children from the on-site nursery into our library space’’ said Kelly Sims, Learning Resources Advisor at Swindon College.
‘’It is vital that young children as well as students studying here understand the role libraries play in education, and also appreciate the value of having a space they can go to read, relax and talk to our friendly team.’’
As well as reading to the children, level 3 Early Years students Samantha May Pallett, Harriet Crayford and Chloe Sutton gave each child their very own ‘Elmer Day Crown.
Samantha May said “I enjoyed seeing how engaged the children were. Library visits for small children is a key part in their learning and development."
Chloe added "The visits gave children an opportunity to engage with real books, rather than iPads or Kindles. It gives them independence and a chance to develop social interaction skills."
