JMW Carpentry & Builders, based in Royal Wootton Bassett, was founded by James Woodhams, who is a third generation carpenter and builder, having followed his father and grandfather into the industry.
JMW specialises in new builds, barn conversions, large extensions and building renovations, and works on projects across Wiltshire, the Cotswolds, Bath and Oxfordshire. The company also creates energy efficient passive homes, which aim to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, either building from scratch or retrofitting.
It is one of a handful of building companies in the area to be accredited as a member of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), an accolade James and his team first achieved in 2020.
“We set out to be different and to offer a really exceptional level of customer service and professional work,” said James.
“We’re proud to have completed our first five years and also to have retained our FMB membership. To achieve this, we had to go through a rigorous inspection, a bit like an Ofsted inspection in schools, but it gives our clients peace of mind that they are dealing with a professional building company.”
James is backing an FMB campaign to create a licensing scheme for the construction sector, to protect consumers against cowboy builders. He has even been communicating with MP Mark Garnier, the Conservative MP for Wyre Forest, who has been promoting the campaign in Parliament.
James said: “I have been saying for years that the construction industry is in the dark ages, and it frustrates me that people can get away with the shoddy practises that they do. I am always striving to break this mould for JMW, so as well as our FMB membership, we are starting our journey towards ISO accreditation.”
