South West Exports on the Up Despite Disappointing National Figures
Figures released yesterday show that the value South West exports bucked the national trend, increasing 10.6% over the past year compared to a national decrease of 2.7%.
The data released by HM Revenue and Customs found that:
- The total value of South West exports in 2015 was £15.2 billion, an increase of 10.6% compared to 2014.
- The South West also saw an increase in the total number of exporters over the same period.
- The region’s top export partners by value were Germany, France, USA, Ireland and Italy.
- Nationally, UK exports in 2015 were worth £279 million, down 2.7% from a year earlier.
Commenting on the latest data, Phil Smith, Managing Director of Business West, said:
“The latest data shows the South West exports have increased by over £1.4 billion, backing up what we’ve seen here at Business West, as in the past year we’ve supported more companies to export than ever before.
“This news proves that the world loves West Country products and services, which should give local businesses a shot in the arm and encourage others to take their trade overseas. With brands such as Dyson and Renishaw recognised across the globe, the picture looks positive for our region.
“That said, the job is far from done. We know there are many firms out there who are not aware of the support available to tap into international markets, and they will be reading this news wondering how to get involved. To these firms we say come and take the advice available both from Business West and UK Trade & Investment. Between us we can help at every stage of the export journey. A useful starting point is the ten events being staged in the South West during Exporting is GREAT Week taking place 18th – 22nd of April.
“Research shows that successful export businesses achieve greater growth and higher profitability, and we should use today’s news as a springboard to future international success.”
