CHRIS HUNT SKELLEY MBE TAKES THE BRONZE AT PARIS 2024 PARALYMPICS

Chris Hunt Skelley MBE has achieved a momentous moment by winning the bronze medal in judo at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Competing in the newly introduced +90 kg weight category, Chris has once again proven himself as a leading force in the sport.

Previously a gold medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Games, Chris faced a new challenge in Paris with the change in weight categories. His dedication and preparation paid off as he clinched the bronze medal when he won by an ‘Ippon’ against Tony Mantolas of Indonesia.

“I’m humbled and honoured to have this opportunity to represent my country again in this sport,” Chris said. “The new weight category presented a significant challenge, but I’m proud to have achieved this amazing result. I gave it my all, I fought for every second.”

Chris, who is visually impaired due to oculocutaneous albinism, discovered his passion for judo when other sports were no longer safe for him. Judo became his sanctuary during a challenging time, and he quickly rose through the ranks by competing blindfolded and prevailing over sighted competitors.

His journey to Paris 2024 was marked by a series of achievements, including maintaining the World No. 1 ranking for a significant part of 2023. Chris’s rigorous training and participation in prestigious events such as the European and World Championships, as well as the Grand Prix judo tournament in Georgia, secured his place at the Paralympics.

Chris’ aim was to achieve a rare feat in judo history - medalling in two Paralympic Games across different weight categories. Despite the challenges posed by the new weight category, Chris remained dedicated in his pursuit of excellence.

“When I stepped onto the mat in Paris, I gave it my all, supported by my coach, teammates, my wife, and my family and friends,” Chris shared. “I strived to be the best I could be and worked hard to bring home a medal.”

Chris’s journey has been supported by generous sponsors including Aldi, Imagine Cruising, Ryse Energy, Phonak, United Strength & Conditioning, and GLL Sport Foundation.

“I am deeply grateful to these companies for their unwavering support, which has allowed me to focus on achieving my goals,” Chris added.

And Chris’s wife, Louise Hunt Skelley PLY, a former wheelchair tennis player, was also in Paris, navigating the city with her tri-ride to support Chris while commentating on wheelchair tennis. They were reunited in an emotional moment as Louise was asked by Channel 4 to carry out his interview when Chris stepped down from the Mat after securing his bronze medal. Those emotional pictures have since been shared on Channel 4 and on social media.

Louise said: “I am beyond proud of Chris and his incredible achievement. Balancing my role as a commentator and racing across Paris to support him was a whirlwind, but every moment was worth it. Witnessing him clinch the bronze medal was the highlight of my journey. His dedication and resilience continue to inspire me, and I am thrilled to have been there to cheer him on and share in his success.”
