Your Total Guide To Business

Bowman House (Business Sponsor)

My Strategy For Surviving Coronavirus

By Dawn Pursall runs OrangeStripe Outsourcing and helps business owners with book-keeping and accountancy functions working especially with Sage & SuperOffice. The company also offers full telephony solutions for commercial operations. Her team also offers telephone sales management and answering services.

When did you realise the Coronavirus could be a problem for you and your business?

When the World Health Organisation announced it was a pandemic, we realised we needed to start thinking about how this would affect the way we work but to be really honest the reality of it is was unimaginable...

It was something we had not really thought through and even now it changes day by day.

What has been your plan to continue?

Initially it was around getting us set up to work from home, check out internet connections could cope with the software we use.

Next it was taking care of our apprentice… she is 18 and I have to say she is coping extremely well; we are trying to keep her busy in the first instance. She did her first return to college virtually recently and found it in her words “yeh it was different but OK”.

Kaci is a real asset to our business and I really don’t want to furlough her I think it is better to keep her working both for her mental health and our's.

Have you changed your business as the weeks are passing?

We are noticing there are less calls to handle and obviously a lot less transactions and I assume this will only continue.

In terms of the telephone services we are managing to still do a small amount of new business, especially on our new mobile deals.

Have you been able to access any government support?

Our telephone services part of the group has received government funding and that has helped to keep paying our rent and other overheads.

What have you seen about business which has been positive?

Our customers, suppliers, network groups are the most positive part of this. As a licensed bookkeeper the AAT have supported us with lots of useful information and webinars.

What have you seen about business which has been negative?

Some suppliers just have the wrong tone and do not have any understanding or forbearance of the stress on others.

However when this is all over, they will realise what they have done is wrong…..as no one will stand by companies like this.

What advice would you give to other business owners?

Keep in touch with everyone around you, stay in contact with your customers and be thoughtful, caring, and understanding.

Your belief system may be tested at this time but hold in there and the good will survive and don’t worry if you feel you are failing, when this is over just pick yourself up and start again.

Refer business where and when ever you can.

Your parting thought?

Current all that really matters is staying healthy because without good health what do we really have?
