Your Total Guide To Business

Lauren Roberts

Lauren Roberts, of Scott Media, has a busy September planned!

September has arrived – what will this month bring? This month we’re asking business owners what the month will bring for them.

Up today is Lauren Roberts a media consultant for Scott Media, based in Swindon. Scott Media offers PR services for businesses who don’t have a PR team in house and is run by journalist Fiona Scott, a journalist with over 35 years of experience in the industry.

How was your summer as we go into autumn? Any highlights for you or your business?
Summer was a whirlwind! So many exciting stories to cover, but the standout moment for me was writing about our client, Chris Hunt Skelley MBE, winning a bronze medal at the Paris Paralympic Games. Watching him compete from home was an emotional experience, and getting to write the story about his medal was one of the most exciting stories I have written so far.

On a personal note, it’s been an amazing summer with my family. We had so many adventures, and it was extra special because it was Oliver's first summer walking and talking—plus, he’s developed a passion for climbing!

What’s coming up for your business in September?
September has that “back-to-school” energy, and it’s definitely a time for resetting and preparing for the year ahead. We’re gearing up for an exciting last quarter with the launch of our new social media planner and diary in early October. September has been all about getting it designed and ready for print—lots of creative energy going into that!

It was also the Paralympics which ended on September 8. Did you watch, what do you think of this tournament? Were there any stand out moments for you?
Yes, I did watch! It was so emotional, especially since I know two incredible people who were involved—Chris and Louise. It’s the first time I’ve felt such a personal connection to the Paralympics. I also caught a lot of highlights on YouTube, and it was fantastic to see more extensive coverage this year.

World Gratitude Day takes place this month (Sept 21) – what are you grateful for in your business/organisation/at home?
I’m incredibly grateful for the flexibility that self-employment has given me. It was a big leap to go freelance at the start of the year, but I’ve been able to witness so many milestones with my son without missing a beat. I’m also thankful to our clients, who have been so understanding and welcoming during this transition. And, of course, for having a healthy and happy family.

There are many other ‘points of interest’ during September which could be relevant to you or your business. Here are five, pick any which are personally or professionally relevant to you?

*Sept 6 to 15 – Heritage Open Days 2024.
*Sept 18 – Read An Ebook Day.
*Secondhand September
*Sept 27 – World Tourism Day
*Organic Your September.

Read An Ebook Day resonates with me. I used to read a lot as a teenager, but now, in my 30s, I’ve rediscovered my love for it thanks to my Kindle—though I do miss the smell of a new book! Right now, I’m reading the last book of the ACOTAR series, which is perfect for losing yourself in a fantasy world.

What are your hopes for business for the rest of this year? Are you launching a new product, service, running an event or something else later in the year?
We’re making some exciting changes to our speaker platform in the coming months. After being up and running for six months, we’ve learned so much and are making adjustments to help it grow more organically into what we envision for the future.

We are also preparing for our two day media summit happening in February next year. There is lots of planning and preparation going on in the background.

Have you got any services or special offers you’d like to mention?
Yes! If you pre-order our social media planner and diary before they officially launch, you can snag 20% off—just £40 instead of £50. It’s a great way to get ahead on planning your year.

And finally, September 30 is International Podcast Day – do you listen to podcasts or do you have one of your own? Can you share a tip? Which podcasts should others check out?
Our podcast, PR not BS, is full of practical advice, tips, and inspiration. Fiona is brilliant at cutting through the noise and giving you real, actionable insights into public relations.

Personally, I also love Happy Mum Happy Baby by Giovanna Fletcher. It’s incredibly relatable and comforting, especially for parents going through tough phases—highly recommend it!
