Let’s Celebrate Local!
By Chris Rooks of Swindon-based Future Balance mortgage advisors.
How are you feeling about your business?
Good, the stamp duty holiday has prompted an upturn in clients looking to move home which is great. Many could save thousands in tax if they move before the end of March, 2021.
While the pandemic been a concern, it’s also made people review whether the protection they have in place is sufficient, which again is something we can help with.
How are you feeling about business in general?
Positive, more and more people are looking to mortgages because of the stamp duty holiday and while some lenders are becoming a bit more cautious there are still options available.
Tell us how you now apply this phrase to your business and/or life ‘buy local supply local’.
We always look to support local businesses and charities wherever possible. We’ve found they’re often able to offer a more personal service and have a more intimate knowledge of the local market than some larger companies.
What has changed for you positively as a result of lockdown?
We’ve embraced video calling and can now offer all of our services remotely and this is something we’re keen to continue to offer going forward.
Tell us what makes a ‘good’ local business.
Putting the interests of your clients first is key, and something we feel is crucial for running any successful business.
Can you name a local business which you support around food & drink?
I’m partial to a good takeaway, so could probably name quite a few!
My current favourites though are: Golden City Chinese in Royal Wootton Bassett, The Harbour fish and chips also in Royal Wootton Bassett and Zeera in Lyneham.
Crumps the butcher in Royal Wootton Bassett also does some great food, and has the bonus of having its own café attached to it.
Can you name a local business which you support around health, wellbeing or fitness?
I’d thoroughly recommend Lee Paines Health and Wellness in Swindon – they are all friendly and knowledgeable personal trainers working out of a private gym in West Swindon.

Can you shout out to local suppliers you wish to celebrate?
Bowman House Business Centre, has ensured our office environment is safe, secure and Covid compliant so we can continue to operate effectively.
Lane Communications has helped reenergise the businesses with new, creative marketing ideas that have brought us new clients.
SupportWise IT for continuing to provide help with any IT issues the business has in a professional and supportive way.
Can you name one person in business who has really had your back over the past months?
My lending panel New Leaf have been a big help throughout lockdown by offering a range of extra support, especially around adapting business processes to remote working.
Can you name on person in your life who has really helped you during this time?
My fiancée Alice has offered a lot of personal and emotional support throughout lockdown.
On the business side, Pauline Grant a fellow protection advisor. We have regular business calls to offer support to each other, help solve any problems we might have and share what’s working well.
What are your business plans for Q4?
We want to continue to improve the service we offer and grow our client base by working with as many local businesses as we can.
Any special offers you’d like to mention?
Yes, we want to say a big thank NHS staff for all they’ve done and are continuing to do during the pandemic.
To do this, we’re waiving all our broker fees for NHS workers who come to Future Balance Finance for any of our mortgage related services for the rest of this year.
We’re also offering free protection reviews for everyone at the moment because we know this is something a lot of people are worrying about at the moment.
And finally:
Yes, lockdown has really made me appreciate local business and the part they play in supporting the local community.
