Let’s Celebrate Local!
By Claire Brewerton, MD of The Virtual Business Centre, the Wiltshire-based telephone answering and telemarketing specialists which have just celebrated 21 years in business.
How are you feeling about your business?
Reasonably confident, we have started to see a few existing clients who suspended their service earlier in the year return to now needing telephone answering support. We have also seen an influx of new clients who have a need for telephone answering support due to changes in the way their own businesses operate.
How are you feeling about business in general?
Pretty positive, however there are some challenges in supporting our staff who continue to split their time working from home and the office.
Tell us how you now apply this phrase to your business and/or life ‘buy local supply local’.
1. We have undertaken a PR and marketing campaign with a local PR provider Fiona Scott to support us in becoming even more visible.
2. We have celebrated a number of lock down birthdays including Virtual turning 21 so Rays Ice Cream cakes have been a Godsend and given everyone a bit of a lift! - https://www.raysicecream.co.uk
3. Barbara Leatham from Barbara Leatham Photography came out and took some fabulous company pictures and head shots - https://www.barbaraleatham.co.uk/home
What has changed for you positively as a result of lockdown?
The ability to work from home for our staff has been a real positive – it has kept our business going and made us embrace new forms of communication. On a personal level we didn’t get to go to Portugal but the flip side is all the DIY being done that has been on the list for years! We did try camping in the garden and, for me it's a no no!!
Tell us what makes a ‘good’ local business.
Great customer service, good ethics and morals
Can you name a local independent business which you support around food & drink?
Rays ice Creams – their ice cream cakes are amazing!
Jackdaws Coffee Shop in Malmesbury – as soon as I could get a socially distanced latte I was there!
Can you name a client you'd like to shout out to at this time?
Tracy Richards at Aqueos – her business has grown massively over this period, and everyone we speak to there are lovely!

Can you name on person in your life who has really helped you during this time?
I really need to name two - my husband Marc, who has been really supportive, he is integral in every decision we make – even though he personally dislikes talking on the telephone! Also my best friend Donna Rawlings who has kept me sane and in coffee!
What are your business plans for Q4?
We will be growing the team however it will be a challenge to make sure we identify the right person to join the team, especially if we need to retain the ability to work from home.
