Nellie Abbott, of Edge Tax, shares her summer plans with us!

August is upon us – it’s the month of holidays, summer fun and time off for many people. It’s also the time of the Olympics (from July 26) and the Paralympics (from August 28).

So how are small business owners coping with the month often known as ‘silly season’?

Up today is Nellie Abbott who is the marketing manager at Edge Tax. They are a private tax firm based in Bristol who specialise in HMRC enquiries and investigations, inheritance tax, compliance, tax risk and business structure.

How is August looking in your business? Does this month hold any special significance in your business? Anniversary, milestone, accreditation, new premises? New staff? 
Summer is usually a quiet time for us, but not this year we seem to be busier than ever which is great. We have just employed a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Accountant to manage all our accountancy clients. Jo brings with her a wealth of knowledge in technical accounting for all types of entities and business combinations, mergers and acquisitions. She is a change management champion and technology lover.

Jo’s appointment means we can start building the accountancy side of the business and offering clients cash flow management services. 

I am also working on something marketing related that I can’t speak about yet but I am really excited to be involved in

What are your personal plans for this month – if you are happy to share? 
August – this will be the month of two halves. I will be juggling working and childcare for my 8 year old who is on holiday for the summer from school. I find the work/life/childcare balance a struggle. However Anton, MD for Edge, is really supportive and allows me to navigate this period prioritising my daughter and working flexible hours to suit. We are then going on our first family holiday abroad to Italy with my cousin and her family 

What advice/tips would you give to small business owners trying to navigate the ‘holiday’ period? 
Keep showing up even if it is not as often as normal. Marketing slows down but doesn’t disappear during the holiday period. Plan your marketing and schedule it now so you are not trying to do it all over the summer. 

It’s the Olympics or Paralympics this month – any thoughts, memories or relevance to you or your business or organisation this month? 
I am so excited for both the Olympics and Paralympics. I love the way conversations are dominated by medal results as we all become experts in certain fields. All gripped to a sport you may never have watched before. 

August 20 is World Photo Day – can you share a photo as an attachment which means something to you this year so far?
A rare me moment getting to go riding with my best friend. It was the perfect afternoon

Did you know August 21 is World Entrepreneurs Day? What does this word mean to you and do you apply it to yourself? 
To me, an entrepreneur is fundamentally a creator. They are individuals who see possibilities where others see problems. They have the ability to imagine new products, services, and ways of doing things that can significantly improve people's lives. This creativity is not just about inventing something new but also about finding innovative solutions to existing challenges. Entrepreneurs push boundaries and explore uncharted territories, constantly seeking to bring their ideas to fruition.

Whilst I see traits of the above in me I lack one fundamental attribute – confidence. I wish I had the courage to take the leap
