November Talk with Lis McDermott
IT’S NOVEMBER! – the year is coming to an end and Q4 is well under way. In the world of business it can be a time for sales for retail or product businesses or a time for planning and reviewing for service businesses.
Today we’re talking to Lis McDermott, Lis McDermott author and writing mentor. Lis has had eight books published on business subjects, poetry books and her first novel has now been submitted for publication. She supports others who want to write their story. She's based in Royal Wootton Bassett, although she works with would-be authors across the UK and overseas.
What’s a recent business highlight for you?
My business highlight for October was that the first of my mentees has published her first book, a memoir. Also, about to be published, is another mentee, with her second book, also a memoir.
And what about a personal highlight this month?
I have finished my first novel! It's now with my publisher and is expected to be released in April next year
November represents Movember – Men’s Health Awareness Month. What does this mean to you?
Although I’m not doing anything specific for Movember, I think it is a good opportunity to be able to raise the issues of Men’s Health Awareness, as men themselves don’t always talk about their problems. Now more than ever before they should feel confident to do this.
November 13 was World Kindness Day – has anyone shown kindness to you in the last month or so?
Several friends have been extremely kind in taking the time to read my draft novel.
My close friends have been kind to me throughout the last few months, in their support generally.
It’s also Black Friday on November 26 which is now quite mainstream – do you participate in this within your business?
I don’t participate in Black Friday as either a consumer, or for my business. I prefer the idea of Buy Nothing Day (Nov 27) as I think we have become a very consumer led society, which isn’t always the most healthy thing for our souls!
I think i'd prefer a 'Do Something Day' where we more fully embrace actions rather than spend money!
Are there any awareness days or special weeks in November which are relevant to you?
Communication is important to me, as a writer, therefore celebrating World Hello Day is great - November 21.
Walking down the street, or within a large office building, just saying ‘hello’ (accompanied with a smile), to people you see, can brighten both their day and yours. Why not try it out this year?
And finally:
Have a wonderful Christmas and all the best for New Year 2022!
