Prepare for the rise in the National Minimum Wage

As April speeds towards us, it’s often a time when business owners have to consider changes in the law when it comes to paying their staff – if their staff are being paid in line with the National Minimum or Living Wage.

This annual change which now takes place routinely and also applies to apprenticeships. The onset of Coronavirus has not (to date) changed that responsibility. A general reminder is that school leavers are entitled to earn at least the National Minimum Wage and those aged 25 or over should get at least the National Living Wage.

Here’s a reminder of the new rates of pay coming into effect from April 1:

  • Under 18s - £4.55 per hour up from £4.35.
  • 18 to 20 - £6.45 per hour up from £6.15.
  • 21 to 24 - £8.20 per hour up from £7.70
  • 25 and over - £8.72 per hour up from £8.21
  • Apprentices - £4.15 per hour up from £3.90.

With apprentices they get this rate if they are under the age of 19, or over 19 and in the first year of their apprenticeship. After that they are entitled to the National Minimum Wage in line with their age.
