Rachel Weaven wants to know who remembers the national record of achievement?
It’s June already and we’re halfway through the year. It’s also officially the first month of Summer, and the weather has been brilliant albeit a little stormy! This month we’re asking small business owners to tell us more about what’s happening for them throughout June!
Today we're talking to Rachel Weaven, HR Consultant of face2faceHR and she wants to know 'who remembers the National Record of Achievement?'
Rachel offers tailored, flexible HR solutions to small – medium sized businesses in and around the Swindon and Marlborough area.
The document that teachers told you every interviewer would want to see! I’ve still got mine and it still smells the same which I’m not sure is a good thing or not?
When I was at school the careers advice wasn’t always the best because you would fill out a questionnaire that was the same for everyone and I think it told me I should be a secretary?!
Thankfully things have changed since then, and I get to be part of it. I’m very fond of my old secondary school and it’s gone through its tough times but the current headteacher is doing an amazing job and I’ve had an amazing opportunity to give back to them by working with their careers team as their Business Enterprise Advisor and I love it.
I’ve signed up to their alumni so I’m in the canteen on the wall which, thankfully, my daughter who currently goes there thinks is pretty cool!
We do mini interviews with the year 7 pupils focusing on what they like doing and what they’re good at and what skills they would like to develop as well as asking them what they would like to do when they grow up. Some are very clear we’ve had Astro Physicists to farming to taking over their parents’ businesses. What I love is there is no pressure to define what they want to be as some had no clue which is never an issue because not every adult knew when they were that age either.
In year ten we hold a careers interview day, where they all get dressed up to come and speak with business owners. It is one of the most rewarding things that I do. I love to see the change in them from looking terrified when they’re approaching you to then beaming when they’re walking away from the interview. I absolutely love it and this year I’ve managed to get some of my business contacts involved too!
I love helping the school out and I love hearing how the students are getting on when I see them next!
