February is the month of love and today we're talking to Rachel Weaven, HR Consultant of face2faceHR about why she loves HR!

How many times do I hear when I say to others what I do “Ooh don’t know how you do that”, “You can have that” or “Are you mad?” but do you know what? I LOVE HR! I love helping people and seeing the relief that when they realise I can help them.

My background wasn’t always HR. I did media production at college and when I couldn’t find a job in that area I ended up working on a reception within a HR department. There I got a taste of some of what went on within the department. When a colleague left, I moved up into HR as a Personnel and Payroll officer (think I might be showing my age here!). My Manager was amazing and mentored me as I embarked on this new career path.

My friends who I studied Media Production with were not surprised I now worked in HR. When we were on the course, my role within projects was always that of the ‘Producer’. I was the one making sure people were where they were supposed to be, paperwork was all done and speaking to everyone to make sure all ok – sound familiar?

I worked internally in a few different companies, each offering me different experiences and different sides of HR. One of the things I really loved was that people put their trust in me to confiding what was wrong, whether that be work or personal, and it was an honour for me that they felt they could do this. I couldn’t always fix it but I loved being that person they could come to. If they went away feeling slightly better then I had done what I needed to do and sometimes that was just to listen to them.

It's not always been easy and at times I have questioned why I do what I do but since being self-employed and running my own HR consultancy, I have rediscovered my love for HR, and what I really love is helping people and being there to support them. I love being proactive when it comes to HR as ultimately its never too early to have HR on your side but sometimes it can be too late and that is when things can start to go wrong which is not nice for anyone involved.

Being proactive and positive is what I love and I love doing HR for nice people!
