Swindon Business Lives - Rebecca Harker
In this week's edition of Swindon Business Lives, we chat with Select Appointments Rebecca Harker about setting up business in Swindon, having 'Robbie's mate' in her phonebook and dancing with Patrick Swayze.
Where is home and why?
I am a local person however originally I came from a small village outside of Swindon called Castle Eaton. I am now living in the heart of Old Town. Main reason for this is I’m close to my business on Commercial Road and I get to see my family and friends regularly.
What inspired you to set up your business here?
I have been in Recruitment since 1992, over this time I had built many relationships with local businesses and had a strong portfolio of clients in Swindon, which is important within Recruitment. When I joined Select in 2000 I managed the branch and had always wanted to own my own business and made several enquiries about purchasing it. In 2007 I was approached and ask if Id like to buy the franchise, which I did.
What advice would you give anyone looking to do the same?
Understand your market and competition, make sure you recruit ambitious and loyal Consultants as people are your main asset.
What do you think attracts business people to Swindon?
Although very competitive it’s a growing town with many new opportunities cropping up all over. As we move out of the recession, Swindon is definitely an area that is exciting to be in and feel very encouraged about the future and development plans.
How do you like to spend your time off?
I am a people person so of course I like to socialize in Old Town with friends and family. I have a little boy aged 5 and we like to spend time outdoors, walking and biking. I enjoy running and Zumba which helps me keep fit
Your phone book must be full of business contacts, but who is the most famous person in there?
I do have Jonathan Wilkes (Robbie Williams Friend)!
Your 2pm meeting has been cancelled, meaning you now have a two-hour lunch break. What do you do?
Depending on where the meeting was being held I would try to visit other clients in the area even if just get to leave my business card. If nothing around I would probably grab a quick coffee and head back to work.
