Scott Gulliver's 2021 Summer Business Plans
Today we're talking to Scott Gulliver, CEO of Fluff Digital. Scott and his team create engaging and innovative software solutions for learning providers, to help them boost engagement and improve the experience for their learners.
May is the last month of Spring – how has Spring been for you so far?
Spring so far has been a really positive time. It feels like there’s an abundance of change about. Companies are getting back into the swing of things after a difficult year, and it seems like there is a huge amount of optimism about the upcoming year.
For me, I’ve also been enjoying spending some time getting back into some of my hobbies.
What are your plans for the Summer – for your business and for you?
We’ve spent our first quarter refining some of our processes, and generally clearing out some of the less productive parts of what we do. For the summer, we’re looking to build on this by scaling our capability and capacity - watch this space!
In my personal life, I’m looking forward to spending some more time with friends and family. It will be nice to get back to some better work-life balance that seems to have been lost throughout the lockdowns and difficult times that we’ve all been through.
What are you most looking forward this summer which you had to step away from last summer?
As most people who meet me know, flying is a huge passion of mine. I gained my private pilot licence last year just before lockdown, and due to the restrictions last year, it became difficult to take people with me on local trips.
I’m looking forward to sharing the experience with our family and friends soon, and getting back into our blue skies.
May is National Walking Month, and walking was an activity which was one thing we could do over the last 12 months.
I love walking. It’s one of the few habits that I’ve managed to keep up over the past few years. Each lunchtime I put a podcast on, and head out for a walk around our local area. It’s surprising how much energy and focus I regain by heading out and just taking a small break away from my desk.
I would really like to start hiking more often. A few years ago, we hiked up Snowdon, and I’d love to go back soon. There’s something that’s really special about walking, and it’s a great way to chat with those your with or just be with your own thoughts, all while taking in great scenery and having the sense of achievement and adventure.
Where is your favourite place to walk?
We love Lydiard Park. It’s just a few minutes away from us, but it never gets old. There’s always something new to see, and the variety of scenery never fails to impress. Our three-year-old also really likes going, although I think that’s more to do with getting a hot chocolate to walk around with!
Can you name one day in May which is important for you in your business or in your personal life?
We’ve got a lot of our close family birthdays in May, but the 18th is our first child’s. He’ll be four years old this month, and each birthday has been so different from the last, as he has developed over his first years.
What’s your one top business tip to help others be positive about their business in May 2021?
One thing that my business coach recently shared with me was the importance of how you think about goals. Goals can be set with specific criteria, but when you miss out on achieving them by a small amount, it can be disheartening.
Big, ambitious goals can be a real motivating factor, and it’s OK to use them as a mountain to head towards, and celebrate the progress towards it each week. Small progress each day adds up. This way of thinking starts to bring about a more positive attitude, which underpins better performance over the long term.
