Sometimes even the apprentice provider needs an apprentice!
Young people who are thinking about opting for an apprenticeship to kick start their careers could find no better place than Swindon – the second most economically active town in the South West.
Apprenticeships are embraced by many employers here and the opportunities are great. To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2020, at Total Guide to Swindon we’re talking to some of the town’s up and coming talent who are using an apprenticeship to start their chosen career.
The theme for this year ‘s awareness week is ‘Look Beyond’ and will celebrate the diversity and value that apprenticeships bring to employers, apprentices and communities across England.
Today meet Adrel Silveira, aged 18, who is an apprentice in the IT department at Swindon College studying for a Level 2 qualification in IT. Adrel is originally from Kuwait and has now made Swindon his home.
What school did you attend?
I went to Swindon Academy and I’ve always had a fascination with technology and how computers work so when I saw the opportunity to be an apprentice in the IT department at Swindon College, I applied and I was successful.
Why did you fancy an apprenticeship?
For me starting from scratch is the best thing to do and now I can learn and develop the skills required for this role. The main advantage of an apprenticeship for me is getting on-the-job experience while working towards a qualification. I’ve found earning a salary has made it a more authentic experience and I’m contributing to the smooth running of a busy office environment.
How's it going?
This opportunity has already given me invaluable experience that will only continue to grow, as learning through experience is an important factor in my development. You can’t find everything in books, sometimes you have to learn by doing things for yourself.
Swindon College offers a range of apprenticeship opportunities working with local employers as well as being able to offer its own opportunities from time to time. To find out more call 01793 491591 or visit https://swindon.ac.uk/home
