Meet our latest TGt Meets...Lynda Thomson, office manager for hospitality services. We got to know a little bit about what she does as well as finding out her top inspirational women!

Which woman would you compare yourself to? 

I don’t think we should compare ourselves with others but if I can live my life the same way my mum did then I’ll be happy.

What would you say is your most valuable skill and why?

Tough question! But in my profession I think it would be my compassionate nature because the service industry demands that you always think of the other person.

Why do you think it's important to have an International Women's Day?

Because sadly, we still live in a world where inequality and lack of respect for women exists.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?

My mum was a very busy lady with many roles, and I’ve learnt from her when it’s right to put your family first and when it’s okay to put work/other commitments first. I’m very fortunate that my job does not demand time out of office hours very often, but I have many other roles outside work, within my church, the air cadets and as a street pastor. I always want to please everyone so good communication is key. If people understand why you can’t do something or why you have to do something it makes life much easier to cope with!

Have you ever had to give up or miss out on anything in order to pursue your career?

Work has always fitted around my life and although catering has always been my passion, I took a break from it and went into early years education while my family was young so I could spend more time with them. Now they are older I have returned to the industry but not the unsociable hours, so I don’t get to miss out on doing the other things that I love!

Do you ever experience any discrimination in the workplace because of your gender?

Thankfully no.  My company has a fantastic team spirit where everyone supports each other all the time.    

Based on your own experiences, what advice would you give to fellow females looking to get into your profession?

If you want to travel, meet lots of interesting people and work to make others happy then this is a great area to work in. But if you’re looking for fame and a high salary don’t work in catering!

If you could have dinner with 5 inspirational women dead or alive, who would they be and why?

As I love history it would have to be great women throughout the ages so

• Cleopatra
• Catherine of Aragon
• Queen Victoria
• Princess Diana

I would also include my 15 year old daughter Katy as she is such an inspiration to me everyday and I wouldn’t want her to miss out on a conversation with these great women!

As a successful female, where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

Hopefully semi-retired and spending lots of time with my gorgeous family and friends!
