King of canapes and catering, John Simpson chatted to us about the success of Hospitality Services - Swindon's number one event planning specialists.

You’re the Director of Hospitality Services, tell us a little bit more about your business?

Hospitality Services was set up 10 years ago to provide bespoke catering to private and business customers in Swindon and the surrounding areas. We have evolved over the last 10 years to provide not only bespoke catering but marquees, catering equipment, furniture and event management services.

What inspired you to set up your business?

Having worked for many years within some of the top hotels and restaurants in the country I wanted to bring that level of service quality to private and corporate customers wherever they are. Helping others to achieve growing businesses over those years I decided it was time to do it for myself.

What advice would you give anyone looking to work in your industry?

Work hard and learn to walk before you run. Always think from the client’s perspective and never sell yourself short.

What’s been your biggest achievement to date?

Bringing Hospitality Services from an idea to Swindon’s largest independent catering company

You must have catered for thousands of events, which is the one that you’re most proud of?

The Land Army Conference dinner last year with 140 of the top military generals in the country hosted at the Steam Museum in Swindon.

What’s the largest event you’ve ever planned?

Pfizer’s Christmas Party in Kent for 650 a few years ago, this year we have an Indian Wedding in Swindon for 1000.

How do you keep up-to-date with event industry changes?

The Caterer magazine – best one in the industry, I've been reading it ever since I began my career

Generally speaking what’re the most popular choices for catering and party themes this year?

Outdoor events even in winter – hog roasts still top the list!

What type of event planning is your favourite? Corporate events or social events?

Corporate – People tend to know what they want from the start and their budget limit.
