TGtS Meets...Karen Thornley - International Women's Day Special
Excalibur Communications' Head of Marketing Karen Thornley chatted to us about having Katy Perry over for dinner, which women inspire her and how to succeed in her industry.
Which woman would you compare yourself to?
Probably someone like Dame Judy Dench, she takes her job incredibly seriously, is clever but has a fun side too. I think she’s got the work/life balance sorted and is comfortable in her own skin. Plus she’s a pro at everything she does, I’m expecting my Oscar any day now…
What would you say is your most valuable skill and why?
Diplomacy and being able to see both side of an argument clearly. This helps me make unclouded judgements on many work and life situations, I would consider myself to be a well-balanced calm person most of the time. Wine drinking at the weekend is also a special skill that's required years of practice and dedication.
Why do you think it's important to have an International Women's Day?
I think its hugely important, it’s no longer a bra burning exercise, just a celebration of the immense talent women have for holding down jobs, families, relationships and the many other things that come along in life. Women are so many different people, wives, mothers, business people, friends, cooks, cleaners, taxi drivers, the list goes on. Obviously lots of men are in these positions too, but we do it with less complaining.
Do you have family (and/or children)? How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Yes I have a very close knit family and my two nieces are a huge focus of my life outside of my career. I see them every morning before work and it sets me up for the day. I want to be a big part of their lives and help them develop into the amazing ladies I know they're going to be. I’ll always do everything I can to be there for them and my family. They keep me grounded and above everything, family, if you’re lucky enough to have a good one, is the most important thing that you can nurture.
Have you ever had to give up or miss out on anything in order to pursue your career?
My career has afforded me so many opportunities that I wouldn’t have experienced if I wasn’t doing this so I don’t like to think I’ve missed out on anything just substituted experiences.
Do you ever experience any discrimination in the work place because of your gender?
I don’t think they'd dare!
Based on your own experiences, what advice would you give to fellow females looking to get into your profession?
I would say be yourself and keep a level head as its most definitely required in Marketing given there are so many aspects to the mix. Creative thought and having a genuine interest in the industry you work in are also essential, it’s impossible to market something you find incredibly boring! The best thing you can do in any job though is work hard, be professional at all times, adapt to change and support your team.
Do men ever feel intimidated by your success?
Maybe once or twice, my theory is to just let them get on with it. They’ll soon get bored!
If you could have dinner with 5 inspirational women dead or alive, who would they be?
-
Judy Dench
-
Maggie Thatcher
-
Katy Perry (to get the lowdown on Russell)
-
Marilyn Monroe
-
Oprah Winfrey
As a successful female, where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
On a beach sipping champagne cocktails!
