My big break was presenting a radio programme at Swindon’s first cable TV Station - leading me into a broadcasting career. I started the town’s Talking Newspaper for blind people and I was involved with GWR from a year before it launched, I was later invited to join the BBC. I’ve held the post of Station Manager, Trainer and unofficial fundraiser for SWINDON 105.5 since launching in 2008, having helped write the application for the licence.
What led you to a career in broadcasting?
I never sat down and planned my life path. During my career I've only ever taken opportunities that I felt were right. This ethos has led me to some great adventures, challenges and jobs. I thrive on seeing others achieve and have turned down jobs elsewhere within the industry to carry on supporting my home town.
Which women inspire you and why?
I'm inspired by women who stand up for their beliefs, who are not afraid to make decisions and who value and encourage other people and their abilities.
What do you think is the biggest issue facing women today?
One of the biggest issues facing women today is their ability to balance work responsibilities and career development with their family and home life.
What's the best piece of advice you've received?
There are two that spring to mind; ensure your house is in order before taking on more responsibilities; and enjoy what you do, as life is too short not to.
What significance do you think International Women’s Day holds?
International Women's Day is an opportunity to profile and create more awareness of women’s achievements, issues and organisations jointly; highlighting positive female role models and their contribution to the community and commercial worlds.
Do you have family (and/or children)? How do you maintain a work/life balance?
I have one lovely son with whom I have a great relationship as both a friend and a parent. He secretly nominated me for Surprise Surprise on ITV, which took us both to New York to spend a memorable week together in 2014.
Do you think there's equality between men and women in the workplace?
In the media world I’ve seen a major improvement in the balance of male and females. I firmly believe, however, that individuals should be appointed to posts according to merit rather than according the need to meet quotas.
As a successful female, where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
Hopefully I’ll have inspired and developed sufficient people to take over the various elements of my job to take the radio station on to another level. I’ll still be taking on challenges, but actually taking all of my annual leave as well as revisiting some of the lovely places where I’ve spent time.
Based on your own experiences, what advice would you give to fellow females looking to get into your profession?
My advice to women looking to get ahead in broadcasting is to gain as much experience as they can; qualifications don’t always mean you can do the job. Take opportunities that feel right - and don’t give up!
If you could have dinner with 5 inspirational women dead or alive, who would they be?
Actress, Whoopi Goldberg, HM The Queen. Comedienne, Sarah Millican. Late Pakistani Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto. TV host/philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey.
