Thrings ranks among the UK's best for training lawyers

Thrings has strengthened its position as one of the best firms in the country for trainees, having been recognised in a series of prestigious national rankings.

A widely respected student guide to the top UK law firms, the Legal 500 Future Lawyers draws on feedback from current trainees as to how well their firms do across 14 different categories that signify a quality employment experience – with awards going to firms in the top 20 of each.

With seven top 20 rankings in the recently released 2024-25 rankings, five of which were in the top 10, Thrings has demonstrated why it is one of the best law firms in the country for training contracts, placing joint-fourth overall out of almost 90 firms featured.

This year, Thrings was ranked for:

  • Vacation Scheme
  • Job satisfaction
  • Work/life balance
  • Approachability of supervisors
  • Work from home
  • Inclusiveness
  • Client contact

Feedback from trainees interviewed highlighted how Thrings was “great for learning and building experience” with its staff “kind, helpful and supportive”, with one trainee adding that “the firm resonated with my values and has lived up to the expectations that I had.”

In offering its verdict of Thrings, the Legal 500 praised the firm for its “wide variety of seat options” with recruits being kept motivated by an “excellent retention rate”. In summary it said: “If a firm with a ‘broad range of areas of expertise’, including a unique agriculture focus, and ‘excellent training’ sounds like the perfect package, research Thrings”.

Simon Holdsworth, Thrings Managing Partner and Training Principle, said: “We are delighted to see this year’s ranking put Thrings up with, and even ahead of, some of the bigger names in the legal sector. It represents exactly what we are looking to achieve in terms of developing our junior colleagues, giving them the best possible introduction to their careers in whatever area of law they choose, and is a testament to the incredible work done by our teams to give them the well-rounded experience that will make them great lawyers.”

The news comes as the firm welcomes its newest tranche of apprentices, strengthening its teams across its Bristol, Bath and Swindon offices whilst continuing its longstanding commitment to supporting different routes into legal careers – a big part of the newly secured place in the Inclusiveness rankings – with all three changing roles within the firm to advance their learning.

Francesca Chisholm joins the firm’s Corporate team in Bristol as its new Solicitor Apprentice, with Isabel Warner starting a similar role within the Bath-based Family team. Meanwhile, Lizzie Parry takes on the role of Paralegal Apprentice within the Property Litigation team across Swindon and Bath.

Simon added: “It is fantastic to see Francesca, Isabel and Lizzie all take on these new roles, which will give them more flexibility to learn and grow on the job without the more traditional structure of a traineeship. Each one of them has excelled with us in their previous roles and I look forward to seeing them flourish as they continue to learn.”
