Tickets go on sale for smash Malmesbury folk festival

Back by popular demand, Malmesbury Folk & Roots Festival is being staged again in the town in September.

This year’s event – supported by Malmesbury Town Council - will take place on Saturday September 21, and although more tickets will be available than last year, organisers predict another sell-out.

“Last year’s event was organised in just a few weeks and was a fantastic occasion, which tied in with European Folk Day,” said town councillor Steve D’Arcy. “It sold out very quickly so, although we do have more capacity this year, we’d urge people not to hang about.”

The festival organisation is being led once again by town resident Catherine Burke, a folk music lover who runs the annual, world-renowned Purbeck Valley Folk Festival.

Catherine said: “I'm absolutely delighted that we’re running the festival again this year. It was such a lovely day last year and I can't wait to do it all again.”

Catherine has booked some great acts to play at Folk & Roots. These include  Phil Henry and Hannah Martin – AKA the Edgelarks - who were first spotted busking on the seafront at Sidmouth Folk Festival and soon found themselves touring nationally. They won the prestigious Best Duo award at the 2014 BBC Folk Awards.

Also appearing will be John Smith, who has toured Britain, Europe and America extensively, both solo and with artists such as Iron and Wine, James Yorkston, John Martyn, David Gray, Jools Holland, Gil Scott-Heron and Lisa Hannigan.

Headlining will be Urban Folk Quartet, whose music is fiddle-led, but who are unlike any folk band!

The festival will run from 2pm until 9.30pm with food and a bar available on site. Once again, around the town Morris dancers will be performing and local cafes, shops and restaurants are getting ready for a busy day. Burton Hill campsite is offering a discount to festival-goers.

Tickets costs £30 for adults; £15 for 13 to 17-year-olds; under 13s get in for free. Tickets are available from the Town Hall or via https://www.malmesburyfolkroots.org/.
