TOP 5 WINTER PHOTOGRAPHY ESSENTIALS

It’s freezing, yes it’s cold, pretty darn cold. It’s snowing, there’s treacherous conditions here and there, but that’s the negatives, let's not think about that. What does snow bring for us photographers and filmmakers? Seeing our favourite local places and locations in a completely different light. Rolling, snow-covered hills in our local countryside and our town transformed to an icy white metropolis.

Now us photographers and filmmakers never want to miss and opportunity to #getthatshot so I have thrown together my top 5 things you may need to get out and about snapping those photos and rolling that film in this weather:

1. All weather Camera Cover.

With products ranging from lens wraps to a full camera case, there is sure to be a solution for your camera that works alongside your shooting plans and budget. Moisture is the enemy of many cameras so using one of these is a sure fire way to keeping all your expensive kit working and functioning in it’s best possible way.

2. Waterproof cases and bags.

Don’t forget about all that stuff you’re carrying around on your back. We are all mobile these days so chances are you’re carrying a huge range of lenses, flashes and your editing suite (Laptop) with you at all times. So protect them! Here’s one I like:

3. Gloves

I’ve certainly not really thought this through before, especially going out on a winter’s night to snap some photos. You leave the house wearing a nice toasty pair of gloves, get your camera out then....drat how am I going to use the damn thing! It feels like you’re holding a camera with a pair of oven gloves and you certainly can’t push those tiny little buttons and adjust your settings! What am I going to to Toby? I hear you! That’s where these come in, thank me later:

4. Hand warmers

Other than the obvious, these have a very useful inadvertent second function. Most batteries struggle in low temperatures, especially drone batteries. This is something I do but I obviously don’t recommend you do it as it could damage batteries and yourself but it totally works,so don’t do it, but it works, but don’t do it….I’ll leave it up to you! So in order to maximise shooting time make sure that your coat pockets are lined with a hand warmer and before your in-use battery starts struggling put a spare in your pocket to get it warm before you use it (IMPORTANT: Make sure you remove the hand warmer while a battery is in your pocket though, you don’t want it overheating, just use the hand warmers to keep the temperature consistent.)

5. A Thermos full of your favourite coffee

Don’t forget the photographer fuel! It’s like leaving the house without the camera itself! Coffee is a key ingredient to any cold weather shoot, DO NOT LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!

There’s loads more out there that can help with a cold weather shoot, just have a little browse around the internet and you’ll be sure to find something. On a serious note be sure to remember to be safe out there in the cold, use common sense and if you’re heading into the middle of nowhere make sure someone knows where you’re going. Basically...don’t be a muppet, have fun and be sure to send me any of your snow-capped snaps through social! I’d love to see them!
