Top Tips for Visiting Business Shows
In order to ensure that you get the most out of your visit to a business exhibition there’s a few things that you need to know...
Don't Come on too Strong
On the day of the event direct sales approaches to exhibitors will do you more harm than good - if that’s your goal, you’re far better off exhibiting than visiting. Due to the amount time and effort that’s required in the build up to an event like this, it’s unlikely that your approach will receive a positive response.
Network, Network, Network
Speak to as many relevant exhibitors as possible. Network and exchange details with a view to contact them at a later date - the middle of an exhibition hall isn't the time or place to hash out a deal. Generally speaking exhibitors will follow up any promising leads the week after the event, so don't be alarmed if you don't make instant contact.
Devise a Game Plan
Do your research before the event. Get your hands on the list of companies exhibiting and identify who you'd like to speak with. Finding exhibitors relevant to you or your business will lay down the foundations for a potential strategic partnership and will stop you from getting distracted on the day - which hopefully means less time out of the office.
Look, Listen, Learn
Business shows are fantastic places to learn a new trick or two. Before the event find out if there are any seminars, talks or networking events that you’d benefit from attending. Spaces may be limited so be sure to book in advance.
Spend your Time Wisely
Timing is key, after all you don't want to arrive too early or too late. Find out how to get to the exhibition venue, where to park and if you're coming from out of town, what transport links are like in the area. Most importantly, leave yourself plenty of time to achieve all that you've set out to do.
Food for Thought
A cup of coffee might give you a momentary pick-me-up but you can't survive on caffeine alone. Consider bringing along a packed lunch from home or look into other dining options nearby. If you do chose to eat at the venue be warned that catering is often limited and overpriced. Always make sure that you have alternate payment method as debit or credit cards aren't always accepted.
Dress Like you Mean Business
We judge people within seven seconds of meeting them, so dress appropriately and be mindful that you're representing your business. The way you walk, stand, and greet fellow attendees will all have a massive impact on how you're perceived. Plan how to succinctly explain what you do and the fundamentals of your business.
Be Inspired
On the day you’ll pick up loads of great tips and tricks about how to market your business better, keep an open mind and don't be afraid to let exhibitors inspire and motivate you. You never know who you might meet or what you'll be able to take away from the event.
