The World Cup according to Twitter

As the World Cup comes to a close, and the players and fans leave Brazil, we look back at how it all played out via Twitter. In true sporting spirit, the world watched together, and didn't hesitate to commentate, celebrate, and commiserate in 140 characters.

After a rollercoaster month in the footballing world, Germany have lifted the 2014 Fifa World Cup trophy.

Over the past month fans from all over the world poured into Rio de Janero, frequented their local bar/pub, or watched the drama unfold from the comfort of their homes. As expected, Twitter was at the forefront of 'real time' World Cup coverage. With 300 million tweets accumilated JUST during the group stages, there was no stopping the tweets from flooding in.

While the camermen did their very best to scout the crowds for comical signs, die hard fans, and an influx of attractive women, you all took to your phones to voice your opinions.

Thanks to guys at Twitter (@twitterdata) we've been following all the statistics:

When the hosting country of Brazil suffered what can only be described as, a heartbreaking/brutal thrashing from the Germans, not only did it break the hearts of fans, but it broke Twitters sporting record.
It was deemed the 'Most Tweeted about Sporting match EVER' with 35.6 million tweets.

There were several spectacular moments that had us all looking on in amazement, and a few that we really just couldn't believe had happend. Despite Luis Suarez' past errors on the pitch, nobody expected him to get quite as stuck in as he did, when he sunk his teeth into Italy's centre back Chiellini.

Within moments, the Argentinian forwards Twitter mentions shot through the roof:

Alongside all the tackles, the celebratory dances, and condolences between friends, there were a handful of players who everyone was talking about:

Whether it was Messi's lightning speed, Ronaldo's fancy footwork, or Neymar's horrific injury, these are the men that had your attention during the group stages.

When it came down to it, it was the ARG vs. GER final that ended what's been a fantastic show. From team mates facing eachother for their country, and consoling eachother through their losses, injuries in the name of the sport, fans congratulating eachother, and true displays of great sportsmanship, the world has been watching (and tweeting!!!) the whole way through.
