Let's Talk
How will the 5G network benefit Swindon?
Considering how many of us rely on our mobile phones these days, having poor signal and reception can undoubtedly be a real pain.
Earlier this year, research suggested this was a particular problem in many parts of the UK, with the study by price comparison app yboo stating that Swindon was the third worst area in Britain for weak mobile signal across all four of the major networks. However, if recent reports are to be believed, steps may soon be taken which could take the mobile service across Swindon to an entirely new level.
Faster downloads
EE recently held a high-profile event to celebrate its new 5G network in London, with a performance by Stormzy on the River Thames being live-streamed as part of the launch.
Offering faster downloads and a strong level of performance, the technology is initially only available in limited areas of the UK. However, there have been indications that other regions – including most importantly Swindon – are preparing to embrace the developments.
It was recently revealed that MBNL Ltd has applied for planning permission to change an existing mobile phone tower into one capable of 5G signals. The plans would see the current 15-metre tower replaced by a 25-metre alternative, with many residents stating that they would be keen to see 5G introduced.
A major moment
The introduction of 5G-compatible technology in Swindon could undoubtedly be a momentous occasion for the town as a whole, particularly as we now use our mobile phones and tablets for so many different types of activity. A study by Activision Blizzard Media and Newzoo recently revealed how a range of app types including social media, shopping and music were among the most used at present.
Gaming is also something that requires a strong data connection, with the report revealing how an incredible 2.4 billion people across the globe expected to try their hand at mobile games in 2019. It is not just Candy Crush and Clash of Clans that people play on mobiles either, as online casino sites such as Betfair have embraced mobile apps too.
Finally, with Netflix, Amazon and many similar services serving up a host of compelling TV these days, having access to streaming services on mobile has also become essential for many people.
A bright future?
With plans emerging to upgrade current services, there are hopes that the introduction if 5G will provide a bright future for the town.
Smartphones and tablets are a huge part of our lives in so many ways now, so it will be fascinating to see the impact that the emergence of 5G has on connectivity not only in areas like Swindon but also the rest of the UK.
