Mead Way set for major improvements

Vital upgrades will be made to Mead Way this year thanks to £4 million of investment.

The road, which connects residential areas of North and West Swindon with major employment areas and the town centre, will be upgraded to increase capacity. This improvement scheme will reduce congestion along the road and in surrounding areas.

Some of the changes include an additional lane going northbound from Meads roundabout, on Great Western Way, to Withymead roundabout (by Simply Gym and Kidz About) as well as resurfacing this section of the road. The roundabout at Westmead Drive and Stonehill Green junction will also be converted into a signalised crossroad junction with a toucan crossing for pedestrians to cross Westmead Drive.

Work to improve the road will begin in early March and the scheme is due for completion in Autumn 2020.

The first stage of the work, which is expected to last 10 weeks, will involve a full road closure between the Meads and Westmead roundabouts and a diversion will be in place for motorists and buses. Swindon Bus Company’s number 19 bus will not be able to serve the Westlea Fire Station stops as a result of this diversion.

Councillor Maureen Penny, Cabinet Member for Transport and the Environment, said: “This improvement scheme will go a long way to relieving congestion, particularly during peak times, along Mead Way. The extra capacity created will also help reduce traffic on roads in the surrounding areas, providing benefits to the town’s wider road network.

“Motorists can stay up-to-date with progress of the works by signing up to the dedicated Mead Way newsletter at www.swindon.gov.uk/newsletter which will provide key updates throughout the scheme each month.”
