NEW COLLEGE STUDENTS ACHIEVE AWARDS FOR ROTARY CLUB YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER COMPETITION
Two Photography students from New College Swindon are celebrating after placing in the Rotary Club Young Photographer competition.
Hannah Parson, A Level Photography student, achieved the runner up placement in the senior category in the district competition and was awarded first place the local schools senior prize. Imrana Ali, also studying A Level Photography placed in the competition was awarded second place for schools in Swindon, in the Local Heats. Hannah and Imrana will be attending the prize giving ceremony at the Mayor’s Parlour on 12th February, to receive certificates and a gift voucher.
The competition aims to encourage young people to experiment with photography, use digital and/or traditional methods of photography, demonstrate interpretation of the topic and express ideas through the medium of photography. The task this year was to produce a portfolio of three photographs based upon the theme, ‘Through My Eyes’ in colour or black and white on photographic paper.
Hannah decided to base her project on mental health. She explained that she experimented with the use of fragmenting her photographs, with the use of shapes, to portray the idea of confusion and the feeling of being lost that may be experienced by those suffering with disorders such as depression.
Hannah said: “It’s a really good achievement, it’s given me more confidence in my work and it’s so nice to be rewarded for my efforts.”
Imrana’s project explored the development of Swindon architecture. She focussed on the element of time and how the architecture in the town has changed and improved. Locations of photographs included Regent Circus and Farringdon Road.
She said: “It’s such a great feeling having my work recognised, I never thought I’d get an achievement like this – I’m so happy!”
