Morrison's will become the second notable brand to remove itself from the £50-million Regent Circus complex after the Gourmet Burger Kitchen restaurant closed down it's Swindon franchise earlier this year after struggling to perform.
Opening in 2014, the Morrisons store has become a landmark feature of Swindon town centre with the supermarket one of the main shopping destinations for those living within the Old Town and Town Centre areas with the shop itself employing 113 staff in total who's jobs now appear to be at risk.
After suffering it's biggest ever profits slump, dropping 29% in 2018 despite record sales figures, the Morrisons brand is looking to cut costs in areas where possible with the Swindon shop appearing to be deemed surplus to requirements by those in charge.
A spokesperson for the supermarket chain said:
“We are constantly reviewing opportunities for new stores and the performance of our existing estate.
"We are planning to invest in four new stores this year and are today, regrettably, proposing to close our Swindon Regent Circus store.
"We will now be going through a consultation process at the store and will be discussing how to reduce redundancies and, where possible, redeploy our highly-valued colleagues within the business,” they said.
The closure of the Morrison's store will leave the Regent Circus complex with a big space to fill but it is yet to be seen how quickly a new suitor can be found.
