Swindon College Students Inspired by Visit from GB Paralympian Jack Rutter
Students were inspired to ‘stay active’ and ‘never give up’ as GB Paralympian Jack Rutter delivered an uplifting and heart-felt presentation at Swindon College last week.
A promising young football player, Jack was destined to play professionally when a head injury in 2009 saw his life change indefinitely. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Jack’s journey back to the sport he loved was a long and difficult one, but led to him rebuilding a career as Captain of the England and Great Britain 7 aside football team.
As well as sharing his story of success against all odds, Jack was keen to motivate and encourage students not only to stay active and get involved in sport, but to pursue their dreams - whatever they may be.
‘’College is a key time in the lives of young people; and having been through so much myself I know just how tough it can be to make your way in the world’’ said Jack.
‘’ I hope that by sharing my story I can make an impact and demonstrate that anything is possible if you have determination and self-belief.’’
The visit was particularly poignant for student Rhys Poultney, 17, who was born with cerebral palsy.
‘‘Today has been really inspirational’ said Rhys. ‘’It’s my goal to become a personal trainer, so hearing that Jack has realised his own ambitions has made me feel even more positive about my future.’’
Rhys also enjoyed a one to one chat with Jack after the session, sharing his experiences with the condition and his hopes and ambitions for the future, before being presented with his very own pair of signed football boots.
Swindon College Sports Maker Jo Wilson, who organised the visit said,
‘’The response to Jack’s visit has been amazing. And what better way to inspire our students to get active and never give up on their dreams than by hearing it first hand from a GB Paralympian!’’
‘’It’s given everyone a real boost, and will hopefully encourage more of our students to take part in sport, no matter what their ability.’’
