Wichelstowe Community Embrace Sustainable Transport
There’s a lot to like about Wichelstowe; the serene canal and lagoons, the feeling of being in the countryside whilst having good links to town and the motorway, and Waitrose on the doorstep.
The Wichelstowe community is embracing sustainable transport too by getting involved in the events and promotions taking place there this summer.
With funding from the Department for Transport, the Swindon Travel Choices team have produced bespoke wallet sized timetables for the number 15 bus service, which services the development and links through to Waitrose and the town centre. These timetables are being offered with free bus wallets and a “try the bus for free” smartcard.
It’s easy to cycle between Wichelstowe and the town centre, without traffic and without hills, so the team will be trying to encourage the community to get onto two wheels. There are cycles that can be taken in the “borrow a bike” scheme, which means that residents can have free use of a bike for 6 weeks to see whether they like cycling. This scheme will be combined with cycle roadshows, where residents can pick up maps, advice, goodies, as well as have their bike checked over by “Doctor Bike” and security marked by the police. There will also be some “commuter cycle rides” leaving from Wichelstowe, aiming to show people how quick and easy it is to cycle into the town centre.
If you prefer to exercise on two feet rather than two wheels, there are some walks arranged to explore the area and its paths and green spaces. Brisk after work walks and lengthier weekend wanders (followed by free tea and cake!) will keep the community striding through the summer.
All are welcome to attend, and details of events will be posted through the doors to let people know what is happening and when. The events are also listed at totalswindon.com.
