Enjoy festive fun at Swindon’s STEAM Museum this Christmas
STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway has decked its halls ready to offer visitors a special day out over the festive period.
Families are invited to take part in a Christmas adventure through the museum with a new festive trail. The activity is included with standard admission to STEAM and will see visitors searching for clues as they explore the museum.
STEAM is open every day except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
The Swindon Borough Council-owned museum’s award-winning displays offer a great day out with something for everyone to enjoy. Housed in a restored grade II listed railway building, STEAM takes visitors on a journey into the heart of the Great Western Railway in Swindon.
Exhibition areas celebrate the men and women who built, travelled on and operated the GWR, under the direction of renowned Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Councillor Matty Courtliff, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Heritage, Leisure, and Town Centre Experience, said: “STEAM offers a brilliant day out for all of the family to spend quality time together over the festive period.
“There’s always lots to see and do, including testing your skills on the GWR Signal Box, taking part in the new Christmas trail and getting up close to Swindon-built locomotives as you discover Swindon’s rich industrial history.”
This year, STEAM has launched three new special exhibitions exploring the changes to train travel on the GWR network: ‘The Diesel Decades’ ‘High Voltage’ and ‘Changing Trains – the Journey from Broad Gauge to Standard Gauge’. The temporary exhibitions feature incredible images and objects from the STEAM collection, some of which are on public display for the first time.
The STEAM shop also has a great range of gifts for anyone looking for any last-minute Christmas gifts or ideas for spending your Christmas money on, from GWR socks, to books, stocking fillers and railway themed souvenirs.
