The pandemic saw theatres left empty last Christmas as the country was forced into lockdowns and pantos were cancelled all over the World. However, 2021 is bringing the stage magic back and Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre is ready to put on a show once again as panto returns.
The Wyvern’s opening panto performance will be on Saturday 4th December, and star act Louie Spence insists he can’t wait to get into character and out in front of a crowd again.
“It’s been a long time with the pandemic and it’s been a lot of fun getting back in costume and getting ready for the panto this year,” said Spence.
“I’m very excited about it and it’s been great meeting everyone involved with the show.
“That break is the longest I’ve ever had in my career but as soon as I put on my green tights that was it I was straight back.
“I don’t feel rusty or anything,” he said.
The pandemic meant that time at home became the norm for many of us, and despite admitting he enjoyed parts of home life, Spence revealed his delight at being able to perform again and said this year’s panto will be even better given the year-long break.
“I moved house in the last year but apart from that I did absolutely nothing,” he said.
“Being at home and doing things you don’t normally get time to was quite enjoyable but I am glad we are nearly past all of that and getting back to normal.
“I think people are ready for panto again and panto lovers are very loyal, coming back each year, and that audience will have missed it and missed going to the theatre.
“It will be more enjoyable for the whole family this year due to that break and where panto is so much fun I think there will be that extra excitement,” added Spence.
Having been revealed as the main act for the performance of Jack and the Beanstalk, Spence gave us a more detailed look into his character, Spirit of the Beans, promising high-energy, excitement, and of course his typical camp delivery.
“My character Spirit of the Beans makes the beans magical and without the beans then there isn’t a story,” joked Spence.
“My character is fun, camp, high-energy, and minces around a lot but very enjoyable for everyone.
“This is my 10th or 11th panto and when you’re in that rehearsal studio you just know how everything is going to come together.
"Everyone here is experienced and it will all just fall into space,” he said.
“There is so much to do this Christmas but not everywhere has Louie Spence.
"You won’t get a show like this anywhere else because me and the other performers are unique.
“Panto is something for the whole family and there truly is something for everyone. It is for everyone and a day of joy, laughter, and fun,” said Spence.
Tickets are now on sale for this year’s pantomime at the Wyvern Theatre but are selling out fast. Buy your tickets HERE to avoid missing out on this magical Christmas experience.
