Magic Roundabout to be Twinned with Star Wars' Tatooine
Star Wars fans across Swindon are ‘over the moons’ with the news that Swindon’s Magic Roundabout has been selected to be twinned with the fictional planet of Tatooine.
In December of 2009, Swindon was selected ahead of 24 other cities across the world to be twinned with Disney World, an honour that saw a plaque created which is still on display at Walt Disney World Orlando.
To promote the new series of Star Wars anthology blockbusters, which have been produced by Disney since their acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, the decision has been made to change the twinned town from Disney World Orlando, to the fictional planet of Tatooine. The planet, which was originally home to main character Luke Skywalker, is a desert world with two moons located on the galaxy’s outer rim, so visiting our new twin will be easier said than done!
A spokesman for Disney, Joe King, had this to say about the re-twinning:
“The Walt Disney Company are proud to announce the re-twinning of Swindon from Walt Disney World Orlando to Tatooine. We feel that the traffic speeding around this fantastic collection of traffic circles could be mistaken for a Pod Race on Tatooine, so they decision was easy!”
The new films, starting with Rogue One in 2016, with more to come in 2018 and 2020, are set to spark interest in the Star Wars sci-fi dynasty for generations to come.
