REVIEW: Operation Julie at the Wyvern Theatre
I had the opportunity to attend the rock musical "Operation Julie" at the Wyvern Theatre on Thursday 9th May. It was an exceptional experience that vividly portrayed one of Britain's most notorious drug busts.
The immensely talented performers entertained the audience with music as everyone settled into their seats, this was when I knew that the evening ahead would be truly exceptional. The superb "acid-head" soundtrack was both comedic and suspenseful, showcasing the performers' incredible talent.
Operation Julie chronicles the remarkable tale of an undercover police investigation centred around Devizes. Members of the Wiltshire Constabulary, disguised as hippies and birdwatchers, covertly monitored cottages in rural mid-Wales.
This operation proved highly successful, resulting in numerous arrests, many of which were held in Swindon Police station. The discovery of £100 million worth of LSD shattered one of the most extraordinary drug networks in history.
This new musical sensation delves into the narrative from both perspectives of the drugs divide: the law enforcement officers and the hippies who sought refuge in rural West Wales, aspiring to disseminate their ideals and potentially change the world.
The cast delivered a powerhouse performance, exceeding all expectations. The show was impeccably written, seamlessly blending well-timed comedy with electrifying bursts of rock songs. The attention to detail in both the set design and costume was phenomenal, transporting the audience back to the 1970s.
Operation Julie will be running at the Wyvern Theatre until Saturday 11th May. If you haven't already added it to your must-see list, now is the time to do so! Click here to book tickets.
