Review: Hetty Feather
Abigail Upfold reviews Hetty Feather at the Wyvern Theatre.
Roll up, Roll up! To the Wyvern Theatre to catch the performance of Hetty Feather, straight from the West End!
From musicians, to acrobatics, to stage crew and actors, these performers had everything under control and pulled off an incredibly moving performance.
Hetty Feather is about a young girl who is abandoned by her mother at the Foundling Hospital as a baby, and follows her story as a young child. The one thing that keeps Hetty going, through the harshness of the hospital, is the belief that a circus performer (whom she believed was her real mother) would come and collect her from this nightmare.
The show is based on the Jacqueline Wilson book for young teens, but if you thought this performance is just for children, think again. The whole audience was in awe, and could not avert their attention from the many tricks happening on stage.
The Brechtian approach to the performance was shown and understood with ease. Having character changes on stage added humour to the somewhat dark and emotional story behind the young girl, and the live music and use of strong vocals, really helped with the atmosphere of each scene.
With the added extras of acrobatic tricks and aerial stunts, adults and children alike were enthusing about how much they enjoyed the performance.
Great performers with slick character changing ability accompanied by two musicians proved to be a memorable show.
Hetty Feather is running at the Wyvern Theatre from Wednesday 23rd September – Sunday 27th September, I would highly recommend it, for all the family.
