Let's Talk
TGt Meets... The Overtones
Ahead of their much-anticipated show at the Wyvern Theatre, we managed to to grab a few minutes with Darren Everest of The Overtones and ask a few questions.
How did you come together to form The Overtones?
We all met in London and decided to form a group. We worked our butts off for 4 years and finally got a break, signing a 5 album deal with Warner Brothers
The style of music you perform has that fantastic old-school flavour. Who are your biggest musical influences?
We draw inspiration from acts like The Drifters, The Temptations, The Jersey Boys. We like to mix the old school dances and fashion with the modern day era.
What is it about doo-wop and vocal harmony that has stood the test of time?
I don't think there is one thing that you can put your finger on. There is just a certain magic that comes from that era that will be drawing people's attention forever I think. Real music from the soul, for the soul.
The Overtones are constantly on the road, what are your favourite aspects of touring?
Performing live to our fans is why we do this job. It really isn't as glamorous as some people may think but once we are on stage we have the time of our lives. To make people smile for a living is an amazing feeling.
You’ve had consecutive Top 5 albums, sold out headline tours and performed at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert. What’s next for The Overtones?
Hopefully more of the same. To keep travelling and performing and get better and better at what we do. We are always trying to improve so I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds for us!
What can the audience at the Wyvern Theatre expect from your show?
The audience need to bring their dancing shoes because we want to party with them! Our shows are all about escape and enjoying the moment. We get lovely messages from fans saying for the hour or two they're at our show they forgot about all of their worries. That makes us feel great.
You’ll be sharing the Swindon stage with X Factor star Jay James, what are your thoughts about the evening’s Special Guest?
Jay is a great guy and a great singer and performer. He fits perfectly on to the bill and will help make the evening very special. The fans are in for a treat. I hope he doesn't wear his favourite white trousers though! The last few times I've seen him I think he must have got lost on his way to the cricket ground! Ha ha.
If you could perform with any musician, form any era, who would perform with?
I would love to perform with Michael Jackson for obvious reasons. He is the biggest talent of all time. Luther would be great too. What a voice!
Given your success, what advice would you give other aspiring vocal harmony groups?
To work hard and believe in yourselves. If you don't believe in yourself no one else will.
Why should people come and see your show?
People should come and see our show if they fancy a great evening of entertainment with lots of dancing and well known songs!
