Your Total Guide To family

REVIEW: Family Day Out at Kelmscott Manor

Kelmscott Manor is simply the most magical day out for all ages!

Finding a family day out that is appealing for both adults and children that is fun, educational and doesn't break the bank can be difficult, but Kelmscott Manor ticks all the boxes.

Described as a ‘Heaven on Earth’ by William Morris, Kelmscott Manor was his inspirational cotswold retreat. William Morris was a victorian textile designer, poet, novelist and father of the arts and crafts movement.

The car park is a short walk from Kelmscott Manor. It takes you on a lovely stroll through the pretty cotswold village of Kelmscott before reaching the manor. An electric shuttle bus is available for those who require.

Kelmscott Manor is made up of the newly built learning barn, tearoom, manor house, brewhouse, privy, dovecot, meadow barn and gardens. They also have a shop and toilet facilities on site. We'd advise you give yourself at least 4 hours to ensure you can enjoy everything Kelmscott Manor has to offer.

Upon arrival we were supplied with a handbook and a quiz for our daughter from the friendly staff.

It was a lovely sunny day so we decided to have a tour of the beautiful gardens first which are absolutely delightful. An array of colours, nature and a running stream from the Upper Thames, it's simply enchanting. We spent a good hour exploring nature and even played a little game of croquet on the lawn. How quintessentially English, we then made our way into the house.

It was like stepping into history, the house is simply stunning and contains an outstanding collection of the possessions, works of Morris, his family and his arts and crafts, including furniture, original textiles, pictures, and ceramics. The guides on all floors were helpful, knowledgeable, and unobtrusive and answered intently the constant questions from our excited 9-year-old who took a great interest in the house, in particular the quirky attic floor with its charming views and the brewhouse and privy.

After exploring the house we popped into the pretty little shop, which sells an array of souvenirs to suit all budgets, before heading over to the tearoom for refreshments of coffee, scrumptious chocolate cake, tangy carrot cake, local ice cream and of course English Scones with jam, cream and a pot of Tea.

Seating is available both inside and out so as it was a beautiful day there was plenty of seating available in the beautiful gardens. Also if you have a little fury friend that you don't want to leave behind bring them along with you as dogs are allowed within the gardens.

The newly built learning and activity space is fabulous as it's suitable for schools, groups and individual children. It's a wonderful creative and inspiring space that is filled with a range of craft and activities. It's a treasure trove for imagination.

Our daughter spent a good hour in here with all the family showing their creative sides and we had a job to tear her away only upon the promise a swift return.

The whole experience of visiting Kelmscott Manor is simply magical. We are so blessed to have this so nearby and we would highly recommend visiting if you're looking for a fun, imaginative and budget-friendly day out.
