FORMER NEW COLLEGE SWINDON STUDENT COLLABORATES WITH SWINDON MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY

Rose Russell has a lot to celebrate, having just completed her studies at New College Swindon, achieving double distinction star in Level 3 BTEC Photography. Over the past few months, she has also been working in collaboration with Swindon Museum and Art Gallery for their ‘Art on Tour’ project.

Rose explained that it all started when her Photography Lecturer, Clare, mentioned that the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery was offering an exciting opportunity to students in the area.  The ‘Art on Tour’ project brings students together and works to move some of its artworks into local areas, such as hospitals and shops, so that a wider audience views it. The programme also offers students advice and guidance on developing a career in the industry, through workshop sessions and mentoring.  

The programme needed a photographer to capture the process, which Rose saw as a great opportunity. She said: “It was one of the best I’d seen for young artists, so I applied straight away. After a short interview I got the role of Young Photographer, however, once lockdown happened the plans changed, but I was still really keen to work with the gallery. They wanted to work with me so we exchanged a few emails and I’ve been helping them create content for their social media posts and projects.  I recently gave them some photographs to use for their dystopia themed week, and I also had the opportunity to create content for them for a whole month, for a daily photography challenge.”

Rose explained that she is so happy to be involved in the project, as it has really helped her build confidence as an artist and to get her work noticed. She has plans to start her own business, with creative portraiture as her speciality.
