Swindon leisure centres secured until 2039 after council deal

The future of six key leisure centres in Swindon has been secured for the next 15 years following an extended partnership agreement between Swindon Borough Council and the leisure provider GLL.

The council has decided to remove mutual break clauses with GLL, allowing the current leases to continue until 31 October 2039, ensuring stability for the local facilities that were initially set to end in 2028.

GLL, operating under the “Better” brand, will continue managing popular local venues, including the Link Centre, Croft Leisure Centre, Delta Tennis Centre, Dorcan Recreation Centre, Haydon Wick Leisure Centre, and the Health Hydro. This long-term commitment aims to ensure that these essential community spaces remain available and well-maintained for residents to use.

In addition, councillors have approved further financial investment to upgrade two major leisure facilities. The council has allocated £115,000 for the ongoing refurbishment of the Health Hydro, enhancing its services and facilities. Moreover, £1.3 million will be directed to a larger set of improvements at the Link Centre, in collaboration with GLL. This follows on from the council’s recent investment of £375,000, which replaced the Link Centre’s ice rink after it was damaged by flooding in September of last year.

As part of its partnership with the council, GLL is also introducing several initiatives aimed at benefiting Swindon residents. One such initiative is the launch of a free Residents’ Card, offering locals a membership with a 10% discount on activities and a “Pay as you Go” concessionary membership option.

Other initiatives include a Kids in Care membership, which provides free access for children in care, while young adults up to the age of 25 who have been in care can also receive tailored memberships. Additionally, GLL will offer subsidised memberships for children at risk of substance misuse and offending, aiming to support vulnerable young people in the community.
