Central Library to Host Speed Dating with a Literary Twist
A love of literature will be used to fire cupid’s arrow when the Central Library plays host to a speed dating event.
The Regent Circus library is holding its first ever speed dating evening on Valentine’s Day between 7.15pm and 8.45pm to offer an alternative to the more traditional matchmaking venues such as bars or clubs.
Speed dating in libraries first started out in Belgium and has become a regular activity in US libraries. Individuals will be encouraged to bring their favourite book, CD or DVD to act as the perfect ice breakers and it is hoped the venue will inspire those taking part to meet like-minded people in a relaxed setting.
As with normal speed dating, those taking part will be asked to score potential partners and the couple who are most matched will win a £50 voucher redeemable for a meal for two at 20 at the Kings, which has been donated by Arkells Brewery.
Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Strategic Transport and Leisure who is also responsible for libraries, said: “Speed dating in libraries has proved to be incredibly popular in other countries and is a great way of attracting new library members who have a shared interest in a love of books.
“I’m sure the event will be a great success and even if those taking part don’t find love, they will make plenty of friends on the night.”
The speed dating event is open to anyone aged 20 and over and individuals can register in advance via Eventbrite at: www.bit.ly/JwuoOF although places are limited.
Tickets cost £1.50 for library members and £2.50 for non-members and are payable on the evening. Anyone who would like a ticket reduction and is not a library member, can simply bring along some ID to become a member before the event starts.
Ticket prices include entertainment, nibbles and a glass of wine on arrival. There will be time to mingle and have a chat, with up to 10 five-minute 'dates'.
At the end of the evening library staff will collect people’s ‘date sheet’ and confirm any matches made during the evening. No personal details will be disclosed without permission.
