Dog Walking Routes in and Around Swindon

Swindon has some of the best parks and gardens around, so you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to discovering the perfect dog walking route!

Here are some of our favourites but we'd love to hear from you too; simply comment below to share...

Coate Water

Coate Water

Coate Water provides some of the best lakeside dog walking in town! You can spend hours exploring all of the different woodland paths and routes and if that doesn't tire your pooch out you can always let them try out their doggy paddle. With loads of green open spaces too, letting them stretch their legs off of the lead shouldn't be a problem either.

  • Quickest route: 45 minutes
  • Free parking
  • Dog waste bins
  • Toilets
  • Visitor centre
  • Café
  • Children’s play area
Lydiard Park

Lydiard Park

To the west of the town we have Lydiard Park. Home to acres of parkland and some of the best woodland areas around! Why not head towards the fields surrounding the Georgian manor house or even venture on one of the many nature walks. Then top your trip off by paying a visit to the nature café for a well earned coffee. All of these are sure to be a hit with the whole family, there's even a doggy friendly children's play area!

  • Quickest route: 30 minutes
  • Free parking
  • Dog waste bins
  • Toilets
  • Café
  • Lake and woodland walks
Barbury Castle

Barbury Castle

This next doggy walk is a little further afield, but still well worth it! Be warned though, it's a bit of a long one. Barbury Castle Country Park lies about 5 miles south of Swindon and is perfect for anyone after some spectacular views whilst exercising their pooch. Hugely popular with dog walkers and ramblers alike this isolated hillside retreat enables you to let your dog run off the lead until the very last field, where you'll come up against some grazing cattle.

  • Quickest route: 2 hours
  • Free car parking
  • Toilets
  • Signposted
Lechlade

Lechlade

You're never too far from the river on this route! Although Lechlade is a very dog friendly place there are plenty of swans and ducks along the riverside so keeping your dog on the lead around the locks is an absolute must. Especially if you want to avoid any animal related bust ups! Don't worry though, there's plenty of countryside that your dog can explore off the lead on the stroll back to the car.

  • Quickest route: 120 minutes
  • Pay & display parking
  • Toilets (on Burford Street)
