Finding the Perfect Dress

Shopping for a dress may be stressful, let's face it. The stakes are so high that accepting the outfit isn't simple. This is something you get to do once, hopefully, so you want to get it perfect. The fact that most wedding gowns are quite pricey also doesn't help. An elegant bridal gown with a lengthy train is a classic look. Nothing is more beautiful than a radiant bride walking down the aisle in one of these little dresses. And you've come to the perfect place if you're preparing for your wedding and have your heart set on a gown with a long train. You may visit Avery Austin to know more.

We've been chatting to Joann Davis of Miss Bridal Gowns of Hungerford to find out about the different styles and shapes of wedding dresses.

When you first start looking for your Wedding dress you are dizzy with excitement, after all it’s the most important day in your life - and you have to get it right.

And then the sleepless nights set in, the bookmarks on Google increase, and the Pinterest boards get busier by the day, and then you start to ask yourself….

What will suit me? what’s in fashion? what would my Fiancé like to see me in? and then in the back of your mind, the endless lists of what you think you don’t want start to creep in. Don’t panic, it's just wedding dress fever! Most brides get it, but when you do feel those anxious pangs, I want you to shout this out loud:

“What I think I want, or don’t want, I may not necessarily end up with”

Once you have adopted this mantra, and your mind is open, this fever will disappear and all will become clear as to what you are looking for.

So let us start with the shapes of the five most popular dresses you're likely to come across, and the body shape that would suit each. But remember, some dresses have a modern twist and so two shapes may be combined and that may go against everything you’ve learned.

So let us begin………….

THE MERMAID/FISHTAIL

The Mermaid has a fitted bodice that continues into the skirt and starts to flare out from the mid-thigh; the Fishtail is very similar but tends to be tighter around the knee area with a more accentuated flare at the bottom. Both shapes work well with the inverted triangle body, you are broader on the shoulder and smaller on the bottom half.

THE ‘A’LINE

The A line is just like the letter A she has a fitted bodice but gradually flares out from just under the bust, a traditional wedding dress shape, she is suited to most body shapes but mainly the hour glass, a little curvy with a bust and a small waist and hips.

THE EMPIRE

The Empire shape hides a multitude of sins, she is loose and easy to wear, fitted under the bust and the skirt just falls often with a puddle train.  Best suited to the Apple shape, full bust, midriff and tummy area, this is a fantastic shape if you are a pregnant bride.

THE BALLGOWN

The Ball gown has a fitted bodice, the nipped in waist and a full skirt. Very beautiful but not for everybody, she suits the typical pear shape smaller at the top and bigger on the bottom half - with a small waist.

THE SHEATH

The Sheath is a very sophisticated shape, fitted all the way down from the bodice to the hem, but with a very slight flair at the bottom to enable movement. She is suited to the rectangle body shape, straight up and down, with an equally sized bust, waist and hips.

My advice would be visit a reputable bridal shop, don’t leave it to the last minute, be clear on your budget, forget fashion and trends, opt for the more timeless and traditional look, be open but realistic about shapes and styles that suit you. Find the shape and then worry about the detail, listen to opinions but remember it's your day, and don’t worry about your husband to be - he will be bowled over simply by seeing you.

Remember this and I promise you will find “THE ONE”.
