Four Ways to Make the Most of Summer With Your Child
With the summer holidays here at long last, you will naturally want to make the most of every day you have with your child. The summer is a time for rest and relaxation, but also one for bonding and learning – something you can do with the right mix of fun and education. Here are some great ideas for bonding with your child this summer.
Ocean Play
Perhaps the first place to come to any young family’s mind when the summer months roll back around is the beach. Seaside holidays are practically a national tradition, with the sun and sea afforded by the UK’s amazing coastal towns and resorts the perfect environment for a family excursion.
Seaside trips are not just great for sandcastle-building, though. They present a unique opportunity for you to introduce your little one to the ocean, its sheer size and all the wonderful things that live within it. From exploring rock pools together to indulging in a spot of sea-swimming, a visit to the coast can create some formative memories for both of you.
A Taste of Nature
Indeed, nature in all its glory is out there, waiting to be explored – and there is no better time than the summer to get out there and find it. The possibilities are endless, and there are so many fantastic destinations nestled in the UK’s rural landscapes.
Take Wales, for example. North Wales in particular is a delight to visit, being home to the likes of Conwy Castle and, of course, Snowdon. There are so many beautiful caravan sites and holiday home spots available in North Wales, putting you right on the doorstep of one of the most majestic national parks in Northern Europe – and a park awash with nature.
Agricultural Day Trips
If you don’t quite have the budget for a longer, overnight trip away, there are still some fantastic ways you and your child can engage with nature – and even get up close and personal with some of country’s gentler animals. Farms and agricultural destinations across the country are always offering experience days, which afford the unique opportunity to meet and even potentially pet farm animals. All the while, your child can learn about the workings of the farm, and how simple produce makes its way from the field to your fridge.
Cooking Up a Storm
Of course, you don’t need to travel to make the most of the summer – or, indeed, to spend quality time with your child. Sometimes the simplest plans are the best, and one often-overlooked activity can inject both fun and education into an otherwise normal day at home: cooking.
Whether you pick a messy dish, a favourite for the sweet-toothed or a simple thing to introduce cooking techniques to your child, spending an afternoon in the kitchen together can be an illuminating way to spend a day. Pizzas are an excellent choice for this, with the summer being the right time of year for both tomatoes and basil – another learning opportunity!
