Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Shortlisted For National Patient Safety Award

The Trust’s commitment to providing every patient with a high standard of safe and quality care has been recognised by a national healthcare organisation.

CHKS, the country’s leading provider of health intelligence and quality improvement services, has nominated the Trust for a prestigious Top Hospitals Award in the category of Patient Safety.

This award highlights outstanding performance from healthcare organisations throughout the country which have provided their patients with a safe hospital environment.

Nominees for the award were chosen after a panel of judges have compared each Trust’s performance against a number of specific indicators.

Some of the indicators for this year’s award included the number of patients who contracted sepsis following an operation and the number of pressure ulcers in patients who’ve been in hospital more than four days, both of which are included as priorities in the Trust’s Sign up to Safety pledge.

Julie Marshman, Deputy Director of Quality Governance, said: “This award nomination is absolutely fantastic news and I’d like to thank every member of staff who has worked incredibly hard over the last year to make this possible.

“Patient safety has always been the Trust’s number one priority and to have our work recognised by our peers at a national level is incredibly rewarding.

“I have seen first-hand some of the really terrific work taking place all over the Trust, from raising awareness of harmful conditions such as Acute Kidney Injury to ensuring that all staff are familiar with the Sepsis Six pathway.”

The introduction of the Sepsis Six, a series of steps designed to assist medics in identifying and treating sepsis quickly, has already been proven to be very effective with 80 per cent of severe sepsis patients now making a full recovery, which is significantly higher than the national average.

Managing Director of CHKS Jason Harries added: “Our patient safety award highlights those trusts that clearly share a commitment to driving improvement and engendering a culture of excellence. It is a credit to the staff at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that it has been shortlisted for this award.”

The winners of the all the awards will be announced during a ceremony in London on the 19th of May.
