The brand new studio has been built to support the next generation of filmmakers and digital creators into the rapidly growing creative industries sector. The establishment of this new studio will provide a platform for artists and creative professionals to develop their skills and to contribute to the thriving artistic community in Swindon and across the South West.
Create Studios’ CEO and Artistic Director, Shahina Johnson MBE said, “Create Studios has played a vital role in shaping the local arts and cultural landscape and has remained committed to empowering individuals to explore their creative potential. Local skills development is more important than ever as the digital creative industries are the fastest-growing sector in the economy.”
The new facility was funded by a collaboration of support from The Towns Fund, Swindon Borough Council, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and Arts Council England. Collectively the organisations recognised the need for Swindon’s first dedicated media hub space for training and production. The team plan to double the number of young people who are trained through its talent programmes, and enable exhibition and collaboration space for the cultural projects.
Phil Gibby, Director, Arts Council England South West said, “The Arts Council are pleased to provide Create Studios with regular funding for 2023-26 and with a £495,000 grant from our Capital investment programme, enabling them to establish this fantastic new facility. Today, we are pleased they now possess a state-of-the-art building to match their excellent and ambitious work.”
Over their 40-year journey, the Create Studios team have successfully nurtured and supported countless artists, filmmakers, and creatives.
Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Art and Heritage said: “The Carriage Works is an amazing space originally conceived as a location for craft and innovation, so it’s only fitting that this important piece of Swindon’s heritage plays a role in the town’s future."
To commemorate this milestone, Create Studios is honoured to welcome David Yates, a globally recognised filmmaker in his own right, and one of the earliest beneficiaries of the organisation's support. He said,
"I was at a point in my life where I was passionate about telling stories, and what they gave me, was an opportunity to do that. They provided the equipment, they provided the inspiration, and they gave me the education to make that ambition a reality. I was so lucky. I could have landed anywhere else other than Swindon and I would not have had the career I probably have now."
Known for directing the globally acclaimed "Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” film series, David's remarkable success has also allowed him to support aspiring filmmakers around the world. At the talk to young film makers before the launch event, David will be talking about his life and career in the world of film.
