Making the Most of Being a Student
Are you making the most of being a student? Being a student isn’t all about the studying! There’s so much more colleges and universities have to offer, from different societies to join, to study abroad programs, and so much more!
It’s important for a student, like you, to make the most of your time at college or university as it only comes around once and there’s so many opportunities to take advantage of! But how do you make the most of your student days?
Here’s how…
Planning is key
Plan ahead and understand what you want to gain from studying. When you were choosing which college or university, why did you choose that specific one over the hundreds of other places on offer? Making simple and realistic goals of what you want to achieve whilst studying can help you to make the most of being a student. Once you know what you want, go for it! Being a student isn’t all work and no play, it’s about getting the balance right. So be sure to make academic and fun goals!
Don’t wing it
As a student it’s easy to do the bare minimum, by attending a few classes here and there, and scraping a pass. When you set out to study, your aim is to finish your course so you can be a step closer to getting that dream job, so why do as little as possible? By doing the bare minimum you’ll be taking yourself out of the competition to bag that dream job! Attending all your classes and keeping on top of your work is key to making the most of your studies!
Get involved on campus
Have you checked out what your campus have to offer? Becoming a student you’ll be meeting a lot of new people and will be offered so many opportunities to get involved in, such as amazing groups, from sports or dance groups, to volunteering activities, to joining the campus radio or newspaper teams and so much more! You could even trial and error to see which activities suit you best. This will not only look amazing on your CV, you’ll meet new friends and learn new skills – all whilst you’re having fun! Why wouldn’t you want to get involved?
Make the most of your free time
As a student, you’re only given a few teach hours a week and a few months long summer break! Make the most of this! Not all skills you need will be taught in the class room, you’ll need to get some hands on experience. You could either do some work experience, an internship or even volunteer! The skills, knowledge and experience you’ll gain from this will be really valuable for your progression and development.
Consider the valuable programs on offer
Colleges and universities have so many contacts nowadays, that they’ll be able to put you into contact with the right people to help you make the most of the opportunities available. A study abroad program would be a fantastic opportunity to live in a different country, learn a new language and other useful skills – all whilst studying! Some study abroad programs are actually funded, so you’ll get some help from the government. Or if you’d prefer a more hands on opportunity where you’ll be able to work in industry and earn some money, you could work in a company for a year which would look brilliant on your CV! Being a student is all about doing things to build your CV, the competition is fierce to finding a job and you need to be a Lion leading with a strong CV!
