The venue is free to enter and will have 40 per cent more display space, compared to its previous home, allowing it to better showcase one of the country’s best collections of modern and contemporary 20th Century British art.
The new facility will also provide improved working conditions and additional areas for staff, volunteers and researchers, presenting an opportunity to restart the museum and art gallery’s volunteer programme.
On display will be one of the museum’s famous Lowry paintings, as well as a perfume bottle created by Sir Grayson Perry.
The history of Swindon is brought to life through diverse material ranging from one of Swindon’s earliest inhabitants - the fossil remains of the Welcombe Avenue Ichthyosaur from around 155 million years ago - to the more recent examples of Swindon's history including empty vials from the COVID-19 Vaccination Centre at STEAM.
Museum opening times and weekend activity
For its opening week, Museum & Art Swindon will be open from today (Tuesday, 9 July) to Sunday (14 July) from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
This weekend, to celebrate the opening, family activities will be taking place for everyone to get involved in. This includes:
From next Tuesday (16 July), the museum and art gallery will be open Tuesdays to Saturdays 10.30am to 4.30pm with the venue being closed on Sundays and Mondays.
