The free scheme allows those 70 and over and people who are medically vulnerable in the Old Town area to have books delivered to their homes.
Librarian Debbie Lamb says they want to encourage more residents to use the service.
“We're offering a service for customers who may still be isolating or feel anxious and or are unable to get out. We will take and collect books to them. We have an amazing team of volunteers who will deliver new books to your doorstep and collect any that need to be returned to the Library”
Debbie added that she has received a number of calls from grateful library users who have started to use the service. “For a lot of people having books to read isn’t a luxury but a necessity. They love reading and not having access to new books has been really difficult for some people over the past few months.”
The library has a large selection of titles and genres and if there is a particular title a reader wants that they haven’t got, the can order it free of charge.
Husband and Wife volunteers Phil Baylay and Jane Caudwell have been taking book parcels out. Jane said “People are ecstatic, they’re so grateful. The reaction has heart warming. One lady we delivered to invited us into her flat for a chat, Unfortunately, due to social distancing we are not able to do that.”
The service currently operates just in the Old Town area, but may expand if more volunteers get involved. Librarian Debbie Lamb said “If anyone has an hour or two spare we would love for you to join our team.”
