Snapped: Stereotype Boys Dance Company Launch Swindon Schools Tour

Swindon Dance are heading into schools over the next two weeks as part of their initiative to show dance is not just for girls.

Boys dance group Stereotype are performing in front of audiences at Swindon Academy, Commonweal School, Churchfields Academy and Robert Le Kyng Primary School.

Afterwards, selected boys from each school will take a class with Stereotype and leading dance teacher, Merville Jones.

The project has been made possible through a partnership with Pebley Beach, Bridgemead-based car dealership and vehicle workshop. The company, who just this week received government plaudits for their apprenticeship programme, are keen to support young people in fulfilling their potential.

“We’re pleased to support the work of an internationally-reputed organisation right here in Swindon,” said Dominic Threfall, managing director of Pebley Beach.

Rebecca Woolven, subject leader for dance at Swindon Academy said: “The Swindon Dance Boys Project is creating a real buzz at our school. Boys from year seven to 10 - with limited dance experience but a lot of enthusiasm and a thirst to learn a new skill and discipline - will really show what talent we have. Watch out for what I believe to be an amazing end project in June.”

Merville and Donald Edwards, both founding members of the pioneering Phoenix Dance Theatre, will be back in June to lead a more intensive two-day boys workshop at each of the four schools. The resulting work will be shown at an all-boys showcase at the end of June at Swindon Dance.

Stereotype (for ages 11-16 years) is one of two Swindon Dance classes for boys of all abilities, which is based at the former town hall in Swindon, next to Central Library. DBOYZ caters for ages seven to 10. Both classes give boys a chance to find their feet if they are anxious about joining a mixed class, and are led by Merville.
